We’ve reached (one of many) peak busy times in the industry. Summer is nuts and there’s just no getting around it. It’s an overwhelming time of year and it’s easy to feel stretched thin. Summer burnout happens with shooting, editing, keeping up with social media, communication with clients and more. Burnout is real and it happens to all of us. Staying ahead of it and managing everything that comes with it is key to overcoming it. Here are a few easy ways to keep your head above water:
Have an amazing plan.
If you’re finding yourself in a funk where nothing feels fresh, taking some time before each shoot to visualize how you want it to go can be a big win. Create a map in your mind of where you would like to go during your shoot to get what you need, but don’t forget to give yourself some space to try something new. Finding a balance between what you know you need and doing something outside of the box will help to keep your sessions fresh.
Don’t try to do it all.
Taking on too much is the fastest path to feeling overwhelmed. Outsourcing can be a great solution to combat busy-season anxiety. Whether it’s outsourcing your editing, finding an intern to help with your blogging or finding someone to help you keep the rest of your life in order, seeking out temporary assistance can really help.
We love Freedom Edits for outsourcing your editing! When you partner with them, you will be assigned a dedicated account handler that will work with you 1-on-1 to learn your style. They will give you a wonderful (and AFFORDABLE) experience and you’ll be able to get your images out the door quickly with a fast, easy and consistent look. Your business will thank you.
Stay organized—really organized.
If you find yourself forgetting tasks or losing track of what you need to do… you need a better system. A studio-management program like Iris is a great way to track and automate the things that take up your time: invoicing, contracting, sending welcome packets and emails… and more!
Set boundaries.
Give yourself the gift of a schedule and stick to it. Working into the wee hours of the night will only compound your stress. Setting expectations with your clients up front is key.
Pro-tip: giving yourself some wiggle room when talking to your clients about turn-around times allows you to over-deliver without putting too much extra pressure on yourself.
Find inspiration.
Starting a new personal project or grabbing a coffee with friends can often help to get your creative juices flowing. Reading a book, taking an online class or planning a day trip will also work to reset your brain and find perspective. Understanding what you need to recharge yourself is critical to surviving the busiest time of the year.
